Thousands of residential houses, several schools, hospitals and administrative buildings were destroyed in the incident. The victims were evacuated to safe areas, evacuation points equipped with emergency kitchens, Radio PRFM reported.

The extent of the devastation is due to the shallow depth of the epicentre. According to the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics, the earthquake struck at a distance of 11 kilometres from the surface. The tremors also triggered a landslide that covered at least one village.

More than 400 marines have been sent to Chianjur to help with evacuation and search for victims, RIA reported. They will remain there for several weeks.

President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin has expressed condolences to his colleague Joko Widodo over the incident.

«The Head of the Russian State conveyed words of sympathy and support to the relatives and loved ones of the deceased, as well as wishes for a speedy recovery to those who suffered as a result of the natural disaster» — the press service of the President.

West Java is located near an active destructive boundary where the Zonda Lithospheric Plate overlaps with the Australian plate. The subduction zone here is capable of producing earthquakes of up to 8.7 magnitude. Indonesia often suffers from these natural hazards because it is located in the Ring of Fire, a band of volcanoes and tectonic faults which encircles the Pacific Ocean.
