Tiny country San Marino

Art

This tiny country is located in the South of Europe and has only one neighboring country, and the territory of the state runs only along the slope and foot of Mount Monte Titano.  Have you guessed which state will be discussed today?  Of course, this is San Marino!

A little about the main thing

Residents of San Marino, and of them, by the way, according to the latest data, 33,600 people speak Italian, which is the state language in the country.  The capital of the dwarf country is the city of Borgo Maggiore.

On an area of 61 km², there are not only dozens of cultural sites, but also all the infrastructure necessary for a comfortable life for the San Mariners.  The airport, of course, you won’t be able to see there, but there is the Parliament House in San Marino.  There is one bus route and one taxi station in the country.  Moreover, there are only seven cars in this taxi company.

There is no prison on the territory of the state either, but there is an isolation ward for 12 people.

 Interesting about San Marino

It will seem rather unusual that San Marino is not a member of either NATO or the European Union, but with the latter it has open (visa-free for EU residents) borders and is in a customs union.

San Marino is also a member of the Eurozone with the right to issue euros and mint its own coins, the San Marino lira, which went out of circulation in 2002.

Residents of San Marino get to Italy by funicular.  The cable car connects the foot of the mountain with the capital, Borgo Maggiore.

The main income of the country is nothing more than tourism, but that’s not all.  The European Union recognized San Marino as a free trade zone with a tax of only 17%, so food and many other goods (tobacco, for example) are much cheaper in the country.

Another “trick” for making money is selling your own money as souvenirs.  So, one San Marino lira can cost almost 12 €.  Not bad business for the San Marines, is it?
