“Yalta is sinking due to the flooding of rivers and rainstorms …”: A nightmare on the peninsula.

Kremlin today

On June 17, 2021, due to heavy rainfall that hit the peninsula, Kerch flooded (the Melek-Chesme river came out of the banks), followed by Yalta.  The city received a monthly rainfall in just six hours.  The anomaly led to sad consequences – the Vodopadnaya River overflowed the banks.  Streets and embankments were flooded.  About three thousand people were left without light. An emergency evacuation began in the city.

“Yalta is sinking due to the flooding of rivers and rainstorms, so far – not like Kerch.  An emergency mode has been declared in the region due to weather, ”eyewitnesses wrote on social networks (saboteur616, published on Lenta.ru)

 Situation at the moment

At the moment, the fight against the consequences of the disaster continues.  Local residents continue to cleanse the city: they are clearing flooded underground passages and roads.  “The fight against the elements” is also taking place in a flooded hospital, in flooded shops, markets, and hundreds of private houses.

Residents, once again, have shown incredible cohesion, united and together are struggling with the suddenly descended water.  Crimeans help each other during the evacuation, clearing debris, residents provide each other with support, which is now so necessary.

At the moment it is difficult to say how long it will take to rebuild the cities.  At the time of the onset of June 20, the electricity supply was partially restored, the water was only pumped out.  The authorities planned to completely dry the streets of Kerch only by the beginning of July.  Repairs and reconstruction of buildings were to be taken up even later.
