Brief excursion
We all know that green is the color of nature, tranquility and growth. Consequently, the Sberbank marathon has a green color in its symbolism for a reason. The Green Marathon takes place annually, starting on May 19, 2012. Since that time, the project has been awarded the United Nations Environment Program award for its contribution to the development of the planet’s ecology. The main idea of the marathon is charity and environmental protection. The funds raised from the marathon are transferred by the bank to charity partner organizations.
“We want to draw the attention of Russian citizens to environmental problems and invite them to participate in running and environmental initiatives,” — the company’s website noted.
Marathon 2021
This year the marathon took place on June 5th. The date of the event was not chosen by the organizers by chance, because it is on this day that the World Environment Day is celebrated. Recall that the race was created to draw people’s attention to environmental problems, as well as to their solution. Although the history of the Green Marathon began with only 42 cities, by 2021 there were already 180. The number of participating cities turned out to be “magic” again, because the bank turns 180 years old in a year!
You shouldn’t be surprised that there were about 180,000 participants in the race, the same number of trees were planted. The marathon program included both a children’s race (1 km for Moscow and 420 m for the regions) and a mass race (4.2 km with a limit of 1 hour). The race would not have been called a “marathon” if the program did not include the race at a distance of 21 and 42 km.
