On October 28, 2021, Miuccia Prada was honored with one of the most prestigious awards in the fashion industry, the John B. Fairchild Award. It is named after the founder of WWD (Women’s Wear Daily) and is a recognition of the creative director’s excellence and influence on the fashion industry.

A brief history of the brand
The history of the fashion house began in 1913. Italian designer Mario Prada opened a small boutique of luxury handbags of prestigious quality in Milan. He staked on clients with high income. Mario created exclusively using rare, expensive and hard to find materials. Mario invited his brother Martino Prada to develop the brand and new ideas. The boutique was called Fratelli Prada, from Italian the name translates as “Prada brothers”.
The founder of Prada died in 1952, and the business passed into the hands of his daughter. Maria took Prada to a new level. Thanks to her, the fashion house became known not only in Italy.
In the early 80’s comfortable suitcases on wheels began to appear. People quickly enough focused their attention on them. Travel bags were luxurious, but they were also quite uncomfortable on the road.
The success of the fashion house was getting lower and lower. And in 1978, Miuccia Prada, the founder’s granddaughter, became the manager. It was Miuccia who perfected the brand, which became one of the biggest and most influential fashion houses.
The new manager changed old concepts of the brand. She invited leading fashion designers to the company to offer something original and new.
It was under Miuccia’s rule that Prada had its own style, which over time began to be looked up to by different designers.

“When I first started out, fashion was the worst kind of activity for me, a left-wing feminist. It seemed to me that by making things, I was doing something of little importance. Then I wanted to do politics. Now I try to make Prada take part in different, non-fashion-related events”.
Miuccia was once asked: “Why did you choose art and fashion?” The designer replied: “Because they are my tools. If I were a doctor, I would use science. My tools are the knowledge I use to make ideas available to people“.
