“Responsibility means we have to end the war”: how was the G20 summit

Kremlin relations

The G20 is a club of governments and heads of central banks of states with the most developed and developing economies. Collectively, the G20 represents 85% of the world’s gross national product and 75% of world trade. The participants are 20 countries of the world with the largest national economy.

This time, it was decided to hold the annual G20 summit on the sunny and warm island of Bali. The Indonesian presidency announced in early December 2021 that the summit would be held in November 2022.

This summit was the first for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Crown Prince Mohammed arrived at the meeting instead of Saudi King Salman.

In connection with the SVO in Ukraine, Western countries sought to remove Russia from participating in the event, but despite the pressure, Indonesia sent invitations to President Vladimir Putin and President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky.

Later it became known that Vladimir Putin refused to speak even in an online format, and Russia was represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

What was discussed at the summit and why did the participants have heart problems?

On Monday, November 14, several major media outlets reported, with reference to sources in the Indonesian authorities, that 72-year-old Sergey Lavrov had a heart attack in Bali, with which he was hospitalized. But in response to this, TASS published a photo-refutation, Maria Zakharova, the press secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a video in which she discusses the news about Lavrov’s alleged hospitalization with him completely healthy.

On Tuesday, November 15, the President of Argentina, Alberto Fernandez, became ill at the summit itself. According to doctors, his blood pressure dropped and he felt dizzy. Many assume that it could be a heat stroke.

If we talk about the course of the summit, the representatives of the G20 countries discussed the main issues of food and energy security. However, political analysts noted that the event did not take place according to the usual scenario: during the discussion, everyone abruptly began to express their opinion about the situation in Ukraine, which caused disagreements.

Also, the G20 has become a platform for negotiations between representatives of different countries with each other with completely different goals. For example, Xi Jinping told Joe Biden that he was ready to hold talks on strategic bilateral issues and discuss the situation as a whole.

The President of Indonesia, the host country of the G20 summit, Joko Widodo called for “ending the war” without directly mentioning the Ukrainian situation.

“Responsibility here also means that we have to end the war. If the war does not stop, it will be difficult for the world to move forward,” — Widodo said.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky participated in the discussion online and proposed an exchange of prisoners with Russia according to the formula “all for all”. In his address to the participants, he also said that now is the time to end the conflict in Ukraine. Also, Vladimir Zelensky rejected and promised not to allow the Minsk agreements with Russia during the summit.

Sergey Lavrov discussed the problem with the supply of Russian grain to world markets with UN Secretary General Anthony Guterres: according to him, all guarantees from the United States and the European Union to remove obstacles were received.

Kommersant reports that the joint photographing of representatives of the summit participants was canceled, and the reasons are not reported. According to the organizers, it has not yet been confirmed whether the joint photographing will take place at another time.

Interestingly, the American entrepreneur and founder of SpaceX, Elon Musk, even participated in the summit. He told himself, his schedule and plans, and also that he believes in the existence of aliens and hopes that humanity will meet them someday.

On the night of November 15, a Ukrainian air defense missile fell in Poland, according to media reports, which was fighting off a Russian missile strike. As NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said at a press conference on November 16, an investigation of the fall has already been conducted and it remains to wait for the final results. This situation was vigorously discussed on the second day of the summit.
