Russian troops at the borders of Ukraine:Is it the beginning of a new military conflict?

Kremlin relations

The fact that Russia is increasing its military presence near the borders of Ukraine, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine first reported on March 5. Some time before that, videos of Russian military equipment on the way to the Ukrainian border began to appear in social networks. Such videos most often show military convoys with trucks, armored personnel carriers and tanks or just columns of trucks, stretching along the highway.

The American newspaper “The New York Times” reported that an additional 4,000 people have been drawn to the border of Ukraine from Russia, and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces of Ukraine, Ruslan Khomchak, said that Russia has deployed 28 battalion tactical groups along the Ukrainian border. The Conflict Intelligence Team collected this evidence — and mapped all the points where military equipment was spotted.

It’s difficult to say about the reliability of this information, but have received no comments from the authorities to refute the movements of Russian troops.

Press Secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov:

“Once again I repeat what I have already said repeatedly: Russia hasn’t threatened anyone and doesn’t threaten anyone, doesn’t pose a threat to anyone. The Russian Armed Forces are on the territory of the Russian Federation, where it is recognized as necessary and appropriate,” — Peskov told reporters on Wednesday, and the head of the press service of the Southern Military District, Vadim Astafyev, explained the movement of equipment on the Crimean Bridge as planned exercises.

Here is what the military observer Mikhail Khodarenok thinks about this:

“The situation in the east of Ukraine from a military point of view is characterized by a surge in another tension. If the armed forces of Ukraine launch an operation against the DPR and LPR, Russia may enter the conflict and support these people’s republics. It is very difficult to say what will happen next. Because the United States has already declared military support for Ukraine, this conflict could hypothetically result in a large-scale European war.”

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that:

“The baseless accusations of Kiev and the West against the Russian Federation are designed to distract attention from Kiev’s military preparations in the Donbass. Moscow calls on Kiev and NATO countries to stop military preparations and escalating tensions in the Donbas…”

It’s clear that no one wants a full-scale war, but we can only hope that the conflict will exhaust itself and everything will be resolved peacefully.
