On September 27, 2021 elections to the Bundestag of Germany were held. During elections in Germany there were 60 thousand polling stations which worked till 19:00 Moscow time.

The election results have shown us that the Bundestag will soon form a new government headed by a new chancellor. Angela Merkel, who has held the post for 16 years, no longer claims a new term. The German government will be formed from three parties. Namely, from the SPD, CDU/CSU and the “Greens”. It will take a long time to form a government, and Angela Merkel will remain in office until it is formed.

On September 26, Angela Merkel’s party was defeated, and this defeat resulted in rather large losses. German observers identify three main reasons for the CDU’s electoral failure:

In turn, three politicians resigned from various posts in the party.

Angela Merkel’s departure from the party

Merkel is leaving, but who will take her honorable place? We will now list the three most important candidates for chancellor.

Friedrich Mertz is a popular businessman and politician. At the moment, he poses the greatest threat to Angela Merkel if he succeeds in winning the December election, it could lead to a political reversal in the CDU.

Jens Spahn. Jens used to compete with Annegret for the position of party head. But Friedrich Merz came along, and Spahn was left behind in the race. However, Spahn beats Merz in age. He is only 38 years old and has a good political career ahead of him.

“It seems to me that Germany may lose its leadership in Europe, because the future Chancellor will, first, due to circumstances inside Germany, be in a weaker position than Mrs Merkel will be a weak Chancellor, which 75% of Germany has not elected. He received only 25% of the vote. It will be difficult for him to create his own line and position”, — said the German political scientist Alexander Rar.
