The construction of the Nord Stream — 2, gas pipeline, is coming to an end, and that is why the possibility of assistance to Ukraine from the United States and Germany is being discussed today.
Initially, there was an offer to help Kiev in the development of infrastructure, as well as in the construction of new power plants. Thus, the authorities of the two states (the United States and Germany) intend to “reduce the geopolitical benefits” for Russia immediately after the construction is completed.
The possibility is also being considered that Russia will decide to put pressure on Ukraine. In this case, we are discussing the creation of a mechanism that will be able to stop gas supplies through the gas pipeline. However, Berlin opposes such a measure, and Washington is not sure that such a thing can be translated into reality.
According to some sources, the main provisions are planned to be agreed before the visit of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to the United States in July.
To date, the Nord Stream — 2 project has been completed by 93%, and there are 100 kilometers left to the German coast. Germany supports the completion of the gas pipeline, and the United States, in turn, insists on its unilateral extraterritorial sanctions, which Germany has not yet supported.
