New sanctions against Russia or how the US reacts to the situation with Navalny

Not so long ago, Russian politician and opposition leader Alexei Navalny was sentenced to 2.8 years in a general regime penal colony by the decision of the Simonovsky Court in Moscow in the “Yves Rocher” case and he is currently serving his sentence.
The whole situation around Navalny has affected the attitude of the European Union and the United States towards Russia.

On March 2, 2021, the United States announced the imposition of sanctions against Russia, the main reason being the decision and conclusion that the Russian government was involved in the poisoning of Alexey. According to the Reuters,certain restrictions are imposed not for all citizens, but for persons who are even partially connected with the poisoning of Navalny, and seven persons of our country fall under this category.


As the press service of Marco Rubio reported in February: “The bill [provides] for the introduction of targeted sanctions against Russian officials involved in blatant violations of international law, which includes the poisoning and imprisonment of opposition leader and anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny.”


To date, the individuals whom this bill applies are already known to. These, according to the Washington Post, include: first Deputy head of the presidential administration Sergei Kiriyenko, director of the FSB Alexander Bortnikov, Deputy Defense Ministers Alexey Krivoruchko and Pavel Popov, head of the Federal Penitentiary Service Alexander Kalashnikov, Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov and head of the Kremlin’s Department for domestic Policy-Andrey Yarin. All officials are banned from entering the United States, and all their assets will be blocked in the near future. The other restrictions applied to individuals are visa and export restrictions.

In addition, according to the hill, fourteen organizations that, including the US Department of Commerce, produce and sell particularly dangerous chemical and biological weapons will fall under the sanctions. Ten of these organizations also belong to Russia, and the rest are foreign: three belong to Germany and one to Switzerland.


It’s worth noting that the sanctions were first imposed under Joe Biden, the new US president, who took office on January 20 this year.
