Nagorno-Karabakh: what happens next?

On November 26, three representatives of three different countries held talks in Russia, in the city of Sochi. Russia was represented by Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijan by Ilham Aliyev, and Armenia was represented by Nikol Pashinyan. The negotiations were aimed at improving the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. Putin noted a clear improvement, as 53 thousand refugees returned to their places of permanent residence with the help of Moscow.

“Unfortunately, not all issues have been resolved yet. I know about the incidents on the border and the tragic incidents where people are killed and injured on both sides. These are all things that require special attention from our side. In fact, that is why we are meeting today, among other things, in order to avoid such incidents in the future. But on the whole, a lot has been done over the years. First of all, there are no large-scale hostilities, which is already very good in itself”, –  the president said.

Putin hopes that transport communications will soon be unblocked. In this way, conditions in Nagorno-Karabakh will improve even more effectively, because this will help the region to conduct economic activities, developing the economy.

For its part, Baku wishes to receive from the negotiations: a map of minefields in the territories taken under its control, the signing of a peace treaty recognizing the country’s territorial integrity, the delimitation and demarcation of the border, the opening of corridors to Nakhichevan and the creation of communications in the region.

And Armenia wants its prisoners back and demands the withdrawal of troops from the border territory, which it considers its own. According to Pashinyan, Baku controls 41 square kilometers of Armenian territory after Azerbaijani troops infiltrated in May.
