On April 2, 2021, Joe Biden and Vladimir Zelensky spoke on the phone for the first time. During the talks, the issues of preserving the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and drawing Russian troops to the border with Ukraine were discussed.

The presidents discussed Crimea and the Donbas:

“President Biden reaffirmed U.S. support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of ongoing Russian aggression in the Donbas and Crimea,” — the White House press service said.

In addition, Joseph Biden expressed the commitment of the United States to a strategic partnership in the fight against corruption and the implementation of reforms in Ukraine.

“Biden emphasized his administration’s commitment to reinvigorating our strategic partnership in support of President Zelensky’s anti-corruption plan and implementing a reform agenda based on our shared democratic values that ensure justice, security, and prosperity for the people of Ukraine. The Presidents agreed that these reforms are central to Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations, ” — the press said.

Zelensky and Biden also discussed “the importance of close cooperation between the United States and Ukraine to combat the ongoing pandemic and strengthen democracy in the region.”

Also, the US president said that he has “full information about what is happening in and around Ukraine.”

During a telephone conversation, the US leader announced his intention to visit Ukraine.

Later, the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States reported that Ukrainian diplomats and the office of the president are working on organizing a meeting between Presidents Vladimir Zelensky and Joe Biden — Ambassador Oksana Makarova.

Politico correspondent Natalia Bertrand said on Twitter that the phone conversation between the leaders of the United States and Ukraine took about 40 minutes. However, Andriy Yermak, the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, said that the conversation lasted almost an hour.
