The European Union considers the SVR’s accusations of discrediting the Sputnik V vaccine to be false

Expert’s opinions

On Tuesday, March 29, 2021, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) said that the European Union deliberately discredits the Russian vaccine “Sputnik V”. The report mentioned the words of the head of the Department for Strategic Communications and Information Analysis of the European Foreign Policy Service, Lutz Gulner, who stated the need to delay the registration of the vaccine.

The European Union completely refutes these accusations, which are attributed to some of its representatives of the statement about the “Satellite V”.

We decided to ask Artur Vladimirovich Kaplan, a member of the Union of Journalists of Russia and PhD in politics, about this situation.

– Why is the European Union not ready to recognize the Russian coronavirus vaccine, which, according to official representatives of our country, has proven its effectiveness in Russia and has already been recognized in more than 50 countries?

«The fact is that the history of the emergence and subsequent use of the covid vaccine is largely a so-called “cold war”, affecting many areas far beyond medicine and pharmacology. It is obvious that the recognition of the effectiveness of the Russian vaccine means for the European Union to accept the superiority of Russia in this issue, which is now extremely acute on the agenda of almost all world governments».

– Should we expect that after the inspection of Sputnik V by the European Medicines Agency, the attitude to the domestic medication  will change?

«I think that the situation can and will change. There are several reasons for this: obvious problems with the use of other vaccines and the recently announced proposal to include Russian and Chinese vaccines in the EU “covid passports”. At the same time, you should not expect drastic changes – we are talking about “big politics”, where every word and decision is repeatedly weighed».

Recall that Sputnik V was developed by the Gamalei Center in 2020. This medication is one of the first registered in the world, whose effectiveness exceeds 90%. Despite the fact that representatives of the European Medicines Agency will come to Russia in April 2021 to test the vaccine, the European Union is confident that this will not affect the situation with the pandemic in any way
