“Born to crawl…”: Crashes of Russian planes this summer

The summer of 2021 is coming to an end, and it’s time to sum up the results, which are not at all comforting: 10 Russian planes and helicopters have crashed over the past three months. This is more than in all the NATO countries together. 

As can be seen from the analysis of disasters, most of them occurred either due to pilot errors or due to technical malfunctions. Also, at present, the use of old aircraft equipment is widespread, which can no longer work as before, but the new models are not yet ready for “publication”. 

Crashed airplanes

  • On June 19, an L-410 crashed in Kemerovo. This was due to a pilot error, 4 people were killed. 
  • The worst was the disaster on July 6. An An-26 crashed in Kamchatka as a result of a pilot error. The plane disappeared from radar before landing. It crashed into a rock and fell into the Sea of Okhotsk, killing 28 people.

  • On July 16, an An-28 crashed in the Tomsk region. After a hard landing, the passengers were able to get out. There were no casualties. 
  • On July 31, a Su-35 crashed on Sakhalin. Before the flight, the pilot turned on an unnecessary option, then considered it a sign of a breakdown and ejected from a serviceable aircraft. The Su-35 was at an altitude of 13 kilometers without control and could cross the border with neighboring states. 
  • As a result of a pilot error, an Mi-8 crashed on August 12 in Kamchatka. He fell into the deepest point of the Kuril Lake, only 8 of their 16 passengers managed to survive.
  • On August 14, a Be-200 crashed in Turkey. An amphibious military plane was supposed to help extinguish fires in Turkey, but crashed into a rock. 5 crew members and 3 civilians were killed in the crash 
  • On August 17, an Il-112B light transport plane crashed. The crash occurred in the Moscow region. As a result of the malfunction, three people died. 
  • On August 18, a MiG-29SMT crashed during a training flight in the Astrakhan Region. One person was killed.
  • Here, five days after the flights, the second MiG-29SMT burned down on the ground. 
  • On August 27, the Su-24 crashed. The crash occurred in the Perm Region as a result of a malfunction. Two pilots ejected and survived.

Over the past three months, 52 people have died. Of these, 9 pilots, including two Heroes of Russia. The media, which covered the topic of the plane crash this summer, wrote that the Russian Air Force is in “the last moment before the great regression.”
