According to TASS, on Wednesday, 8 December, at a meeting of the State Duma, deputies approved a legal project on the extension of police rights. According to this law, officers of the Service will be authorized to enter dwellings, land and places of detention. Police officers will also be able to open cars. However, they will only be granted these rights under certain circumstances.

For example, the same inspection of transport can be carried out only in cases where a passenger is in danger of death or to apprehend – a citizen is suspected of committing a crime. The law also allows a police officer for public security or when there is a threat of a terrorist attack. In addition, operatives can carry out an inspection if there is reason to believe that the citizen behind the wheel is not sober.

In the case of a cordon, the document enshrines the right of the police to search all citizens caught in the cordon. If a citizen refuses, the operatives have the right not to let him out of the cordoned-off area or not to let him inside.

The possibility of inspection of a citizen is also supported by suspicion of drugs, weapons, and the presence of “objects of theft”.

Earlier during the second law several resonant clauses were removed. Thus, in its original form the law contained a clause on the right of a police officer to use firearms in the case of an attempt on the life of an operative.

The new law gives the agency a lot of new opportunities, but we should not forget the famous phrase from the movie “Marvel”: “The greater the power, the greater the responsibility”. Now, with these rights the police will also have new responsibilities, and the expectations for successful completion of tasks will be much higher.
