Communists asked Putin to recognize LNR and DNR

The CPRF gave reasons why Russia should recognize the independence of the DPR and the LNR

According to Lenta.ru, the deputies of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, led by Zyuganov, submitted a bill to the State Duma calling on the President to recognize the Donbas republics. The document is available in the Duma database.

In addition to asking for recognition, the deputies ask Putin to meet with the leaders of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics to establish the basis of diplomatic relations.

The Communists cite several arguments as the basis for the political decision. CPRF members accuse Ukraine of an inhumane attitude to the residents of Donbas: the Ukrainian authorities “have become intolerant of the historical norms of everyday life, as well as the will and religion of the residents”.

The MPs also noted that residents of the republics had been “living under shelling” since 2014. The fact that Ukraine is ignoring the Minsk agreements was once again stressed. The Communists are confident that “recognition will create grounds for guaranteeing the security and protection of their peoples from external threats and the implementation of a policy of genocide against the inhabitants of the republics…”.

Almost immediately, President Peskov’s press secretary reported that the Kremlin had not seen a parliamentary address. However, he noted as early as December that the consequences of recognition of the Donbas republics were difficult to predict.

Deputies from other parties also expressed opinions on the bill. Thus, for example, the head of «Fair Russia – for the truth!» RIA Novosti stated that the faction was ready to support the Communist initiative. Deputy head Vladimir Djabarov said that recognition of republics is the prerogative of those responsible for foreign policy. He recalled that the President, not the State Duma, was responsible for foreign policy.

Zyuganov himself, in an interview for RIA Novosti, explained the need to recognise the DNR and LNR as follows: “This will be an exceptional step to provide for the citizens living in these republics <…> the decision will allow us all to breathe a sigh of relief and not watch the citizens there, including Russians, suffer humiliation“, said the politician .

The Head of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Denis Pushilin, had earlier reported an increase in the number of residents receiving Russian citizenship. By the end of last year, there were over 350,000.

The draft law is expected to be considered by the State Duma in February.
