Winter Story: The missing father and son were found in Murmansk

On January 17, Mikhail and his seven-year-old son were reported missing. On a snowmobile, they left the village of Nickel in the Murmansk region for Lake Zajac, but by nightfall the father and son had not returned.

The neighbors of the missing report that on 17 January it was clear and it was not until 4:00 that a snowstorm broke out, but that the lake is relatively far from the village. It was suspected that Mikhail and his son had no food or water. It was later revealed that his father had brought food, water and a tent. 

During the night, following the report of the disappearance, the rescue workers of the Murmansk Arctic Complex Rescue Center, consisting of four units of equipment and four persons, were dispatched and volunteers with a good knowledge of the area were also involved. At 3:40 a.m., on 18 January, three reinforcements and two pieces of equipment were dispatched.

On the morning of January 18, Mikhail reached out to the Ministry of Emergency Situations. He said that the snowmobile had broken down and that the battery on the phone was almost empty, so it was decided to walk to Nickel.

“The rescue operation was carried out in strong wind, snowstorms and low visibility, and the search did not stop for a minute. At 11:25 a.m. on January 18,  people were rescued”, –  Dean Rygin, head of the press service of the Arctic rescue agency, said.
