Dior made Chinese women look “bad”

Christian Dior is a French company known throughout the world, founded by designer Christian Dior and entrepreneur Marcel Boussac in 1946 as an atelier of high fashion.

The fashion house was hit by a wave of criticism in China, the cause for the scandal was one photo, presented as part of the Dior exhibition in Shanghai, which, as some people said, put Chinese girls in a “bad light”. Before that, a Christian Dior exhibition called Lady Dior opened in Shanghai, which also took place in some other countries, including Russia. One of the photos is a portrait of a girl of Asian descent holding a bag of the fashion house, and it was this photo that gathered so much buzz around it.

Beijing Daily published an article with a rather loud headline: “Is this what Chinese women look like? Western luxury brands are up to their old tricks again…”

But there were those who fought back and defended the haute couture house. Social network users said that Westerners appreciate the ethnic characteristics of the Chinese, are not limited to a single established standard of beauty and did not even think that one advertising image could offend so many people and cause so much outrage.

Dior, of course, had to remove the photo from the exhibition. The fashion house remains silent and does not comment on the situation.

“The photo shows a model with small squinted eyes, blue-black eye shadow, a gloomy freckled face, greasy hair, and still wearing Qing Dynasty robes”, –  the publication wrote.

Dior is literally accused of intentionally “disfiguring” Asian women in its pictures.

“The photographer is playing along with the brands or aesthetic tastes of the Western world. For years Asian women have been portrayed with small eyes and freckles, but the Chinese vision of beauty and art should not be distorted by this vision, –  also Beijing Daily.

The brand has been hit with a mountain of outrage not only by Chinese publications, but also by fans from around the world. The exhibition has already been called “the failure of the year”.
