How did it happen?

On the morning of September 11, four civilian aircraft operating flights from Logan (Boston, Washington), Dulles (Lowden County, Virginia) and Newark (Newark, New Jersey) airports to California were hijacked by suicide bombers almost immediately after takeoff.

At approximately 7:30 in the morning, five members of the terrorist group boarded the American Airlines flight 011. At 8 am, five more hijackers arrived on another United Airlines flight 175 plane.

There were 56 passengers and 9 crew members on board with them.

Almost immediately, the flight attendant of the first American Airlines plane notices that the aircraft is in possible danger. She reports the following to the airline’s office by on-board phone:

“The cockpit isn’t responding, someone is injured in business class, I think they used tear gas, we can’t breathe, I don’t know, it looks like we are captured.”

At 8: 20 am New York time, the third hijacked plane, departing from Dulles Airport, headed for Los Angeles. The terrorist, who is in the cockpit, utters the phrase: “No one moves. Everything will be fine. If you try to move, you will endanger both yourself and the plane. Stay quiet.”

The plane, which took off from Boston at a speed of about 790 km/h, crashed into the building of the North Tower of the World Trade Center between the 93 and 98 floors. The aircraft almost completely goes into the building, punching it to the middle, where the power structures are located, and cuts all three stairwells, filling them with debris. A powerful shock wave passes through the building to the ground and back. 80 tons of aviation kerosene mixed with the wreckage of an airplane and a building created a huge fire. People who are below the impact zone are evacuated from the building, people who are higher can not do this due to the fact that all the stairs are blocked. According to various sources, from 100 to 250 people had to jump from windows above the 93rd floor. The speed of falling people at the time of collision with the ground was about 250 km/h, while the fall time was about 10 seconds. One of the firefighters on the ground instantly dies due to the fact that a person who jumped out of the window of the tower fell directly on him.

15 minutes after the first crash, another thing happens: flight 175 crashes at a speed of about 959 km/h into the southside of the South Tower of the WTC between floors 78 and 85. A complete evacuation of all those who were in the South Tower below the hit zone of the aircraft begins. One of the stairs of the South Tower remains not blocked in the hit zone, but the stairwell is filled with smoke. That’s why, many people from the upper floors go up to the roof, instead of going down this staircase.

Immediately after the first two events, US airspace is closed. Civilian aircraft are prohibited from taking off, and all aircraft in the air are sent to the nearest airports for immediate landing. All international flights heading to the United States are redirected to Canada. Canada is also closing its airspace.

At 10 am, the South Tower of the World Trade Center completely collapses. Manhattan is covered with huge clouds of dust.

The northern tower of the WTC is completely destroyed after 1 hour, 41 minutes and 51 seconds after flight 11 hit it. Due to the complete destruction of the stairwells in the hit zone of the aircraft, none of those who were on the upper floors survived. The Marriott Hotel, located between the Twin Towers, is also completely destroyed.

Three minutes after the collapse of the South Tower, United Airlines Flight 93 crashes 129 km southeast of Pittsburgh in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Because of the fire, five floors of the Pentagon building collapsed.

Our days

This event caused a huge shock not only for America, but also for the whole world. Now on the site of the twin towers there is a national memorial, which is a complex of several black marble pools into which water flows along the perimeter, and inscriptions of the names of all the victims are engraved on the edges. The purpose of the complex is to convey the full depth of the grief of the American people for the innocent victims of the terrorist attack. This place is called Ground Zero Zero level. The monument is dedicated to those who died on the day of the terrorist attacks or participated in the rescue of people.
