The aftermath of the protracted US-Iraq conflict: Iran aims 10 missiles at the US embassy

Kremlin relations

Relations between Iran and the United States have been quite tense for the last couple of decades, and indeed have been at a peak more than once. But this was not always the case: since the end of the Second World War, the US and Iran had been on pretty friendly terms.

After the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979, relations between the two states deteriorated.

66 American diplomats at the US Embassy were taken hostage on 4 November 1979. They were not released until 20 January 1981. Since then, diplomatic relations between the US and Iran have been severed; to date, they have not been restored.

Another event that damaged relations between the two countries was the Iran-Iraq War, in which the US embraced Iraq’s allied side. This support included economic assistance (several billion dollars), arms supplies and military intelligence. All these events have led to a prolonged conflict.

On the night of 12-13 March 2022, Iran fired several missiles at US military installations in Iraq. The media attributed the action to US retaliation for the killing of two Iranian officers in Syria.

According to experts, if the US government decides to respond to Iran, the Iranians are likely to cut off 40% of the total volume of oil and oil products transported by sea and up to 20% of all oil produced in the world. And given the recent sanctions imposed by the Russian president on the US to ban oil sales, this would likely cause the biggest crisis not only within America, but around the world.
