The totals of the year 2021

Kremlin relations

The year 2021 is coming to an end, so “The Kremlin” wants to cover the most exciting news this year. It really came out difficult but memorable.

  • Nagorny Karabakh: Recurrent instability

The territory of Nagorny Karabakh has never been particularly calm, but in 2021 hostilities resumed briefly. Let us recall that Nagorny Karabakh is an unrecognized republic, because of which there is a conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as both sides want to have this territory. The 3,000-square-kilometre war has been going on since February 1988, but once there was 3.5 times more territory. This year the war cost several days, although in 2020 it lasted 1.5 months.

Also, Vladimir Putin did not miss opportunities and on 26 November gathered representatives of Armenia and Azerbaijan for talks. It was concluded that the situation had become more quiet, but there were still questions to be resolved.

  • A new era of Afghanistan under the Taliban

The airport in Kabul was full of Afghans hoping to get out of Afghanistan as quickly as possible. Particularly those who had been active in the country or who were helping the Americans were trying to leave. The president was the first to flee the country. The reason was the capture of the Afghan capital by the Taliban. Within days, the Taliban introduced many new changes. The country has fallen into medieval times; people are still dying of starvation and disease to this day. Women and the economy suffered the most. The former were forbidden to study, not to appear on TV, the burqa was made compulsory and so on. And the economy will not go up under such a government because all foreign exchange transactions have been banned. What will happen next? We will find out next year.

  • The Capitol: another attempted mutiny

Supporters of Donald Trump staged protests outside the Capitol on 7 January. Some managed to get into the building where congressmen were summing up the election results, in which Joe Biden won. CNN announced that this was the first storm in which it had succeeded in getting into the building. Politicians in America called the storming a coup attempt. The Senate was forced to end negotiations as politicians realised that the White House was surrounded by Trump supporters. Those who entered the building behaved quite decently, taking pictures and patriotically holding the US flag in their hands. The Senate left the building at this point and urgently took away the ballots.

  •  The departure of the Iron Frau

Angela Merkel did not win the 2021 election. The ‘no’ woman has been chancellor for 16 years. During this long reign, Merkel has certainly left her name in history. A farewell event for the former chancellor was held on December 2. People had different emotions as they said goodbye to her. Some showered Angela with criticism and some with praise. But it all came down to Olaf Scholz as the new chancellor.

  • A new era of “Russian Newspaper”

On 6 September the last pipe of Nord Stream 2 was laid. Construction was indeed protracted, although it was planned for as early as 2019. Also, the US imposed sanctions, preventing Russia from completing the pipeline. America wanted to sell their gas to Germany, even though it was more expensive. They realised that Washington was losing its power to sell gas.

Only the Green Party was against the pipeline, but they found a compromise and agreed to the move.

  • The Olympic Games in Tokyo

Russia performed really well in all disciplines this year. The pandemonium interpreted its own rules, but that did not stop the Tokyo Games from being such a brilliant and memorable experience. Yes, there were many scandals, but the classic “Faster, Higher, Stronger” played a big part in those scandals. Many countries are remembered not only for their victories, but also for the show they put on. Slovenian basketball players, for example, were remembered for their card party and Australians for their hockey. And the enforced isolation forced the players to play stalkers and climb out of their rooms at night. Russia stood out with their results, finishing 5th, but that’s a reason to strive further. In total there were 71 medals in the piggy bank.

  • Navalny: a new show or a new victim?

For more than four months, Alexei was treated in Germany after being poisoned. But for some reason he decided to go back to his homeland. Navalny officially announced this and was immediately put on the federal wanted list. In Russia he was met by Olga Buzova’s fans and supporters, and at the passport control by the police. Navalny was detained and then imprisoned. The blogger said he was not afraid and that that day was the best in the last 5 months.
A new show or a really scary reality? There is still no answer to this question. But the support of other countries such as the USA, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Germany and many other countries is worth noting.

  • The Nobel Prize for Free Speech

On December 10, 2021, Dmitry Muratov, editor-in-chief of the “New Newspaper”, received the Nobel Prize. The same award was given to Philippine journalist Maria Ressa, head of the opposition website Rappler. The Committee had rewarded journalists for their courageous struggle for freedom of expression in the Philippines and Russia. They were among the few who defended modern values.

  • A new tragedy in Kazan

On 11 May, a massacre occurred at Jawdat Faizi Street, Gymnasium 175. One Ilyaz Galyaviyev opened fire, killing 9 people and wounding 23 others. Leonaz pretended to be a god and showed the whole process of preparing for a terrorist attack on his blog. Galyaviev was prosecuted for mass murder. The morning before the attack, he wanted to blow up the house, but fortunately, the fire went out, so the six-storey house did not explode. May 12 is declared a day of mourning.
