Why them?: Maldives go under water

The Maldives, or the Maldives Islands, is a favorite holiday destination for many tourists. People are attracted to the sandy beaches, the clean and fascinating sea, the sun and the “paradise” atmosphere. However, by the end of the XXI century, a small paradise on earth may disappear.

On May 18, the Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology of the island state, Aminat Shauna, said this on the live broadcast of the American TV channel CNBC. The woman noted that one of the main reasons for the “disappearance” may be climate change, or rather the wrong management of the fight against it. The Maldives is one of the most vulnerable countries due to its location, and there is no way to avoid changes. Today, about 80% of all the islands are located at an altitude of one meter above sea level, and most of the coastal areas are already subject to flooding.

Aminat Shauna said that the local authorities are now trying to do everything possible to reduce the risk of extinction. For example, measures have begun to be taken to protect coastal areas, as well as to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

It is also worth noting that not so long ago, just a few days ago, the Darwin Arch collapsed under the influence of erosion. It was a world-famous landmark of the Galapagos Islands. In addition, the white cliffs of Dover also split and sank in February 2021.
