On October 4, at about 18:30, a big failure began in social networks called “Facebook”, “Instagram” and “WhatsApp”.
Users couldn’t send messages and update the news feed. Then there were complaints about interruptions from users of “TikTok” and “VKontakte”.
The work of the networks began to resume by about 00:45 Moscow time.

“The Facebook outage is the biggest disruption the service has ever seen”, — said Downdetector —a service that monitors problems with access to websites.


The collapse of world-famous social media affected about 2.7 billion users.The official reason for the malfunction was a «failed program configuration change that caused a malfunction of DNS routers». Thus one can conclude that the error was the fault of the organization.

“It seems that Facebook built a centralized network management and made a mistake there”, — writes Forbes.

Amid technical problems, Facebook shares fell 4.89% by 23:00 Moscow time.

“We sincerely apologize to everyone affected by the Facebook server outage, — the company’s chief technology officer, Mark Schrepfer, posted on Twitter. 


The creator of the social network himself, Mark Zuckerberg, lost about $6.4 billion in six hours and dropped from fourth place to sixth in the ranking of the richest people in the world.  

NetBlocks said that the fall of the social networks “Facebook” “WhatsApp” and “Instagram” cost the global economy 161 million dollars in one hour.
