US — Ukraine relations at the moment.

Expert’s opinions

“We firmly support Ukraine, we intend to strengthen this support – whether it’s about security, economy, or its own efforts to strengthen democracy,” — US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in Washington on March 10.

He said that the United States will strengthen its assistance to Ukraine.

Unlike Trump, who was against any contact with Ukraine, Biden has previously spoken out about US-Ukraine relations. On March 4, he said that he is ready to push Ukraine to reform “sometimes in a tough way”, but “with good intentions” … “the United States is helping Ukraine to take important political actions in order to create a successful state.  Joe Biden is exactly the partner that Ukraine needs right now, ” — the former ambassador added.

But what is the benefit for the United States? And also, why did relations with Ukraine begin to improve under Biden?

Ilya Titaev, a student from the international journalism module, shared his opinion on this issue.

“The United States, like any country in the world, has a so-called sphere of its foreign policy interests. And the post-Soviet space as a whole is moving into this sphere. For the United States, it’s important that democratic regimes with a conventionally “Western” format of democracy begin to form in countries that leave the Russian sphere of influence. In principle, the United States is ready to spend its own efforts on this, including some financial investments, because this creates potential allies for them in the region of interests of one of their main geopolitical opponents.

On the other hand, it is important to note that at the moment, the administration of President Biden shows any initiative so far only in words. Nothing, but words has yet been done by her (the administration). Moreover, in general, during the presidency of Donald Trump, the United States has reduced its activity in this region.

In principle, the Biden administration is expected to continue the course of Barack Obama and, in general, the Democrats, who interfere more in this. But so far, nothing but words, i.e. exclusively declarative support, has been done.

In addition, it’s very important to note that Ukraine is not currently the top priority of the Biden administration’s foreign policy.

The main focus of the new administration’s work now is the domestic politics of post-Trump America. The second direction is the restoration of damaged international agreements (the Paris Climate Agreement, Iran, Europe, etc.). And Ukraine is far from the top of this list..”
