The land of eternal Sunday

Dominica is a small island of volcanic origin in the Caribbean Sea. Most tourists know almost nothing about the country of the same name, and many, having heard the name, say whether it meant Dominicans.

No gold was found in the territory, but there was an aggressive local population, so it was forgotten after the discovery of the island in 1493. In 1635, France formally recognized Dominica as its territory. However, as early as the 1660s, the French and British entered into an agreement whereby Dominica and Saint Vincent were to be left to their Caribbean Indians. For a hundred years the island remains a nobody, but Europeans still decide to return. The next events in Dominica are marked by bloody battles between England and France, who are trying to establish themselves on the island. This is how the Massacre River appears across the country, named because it has been red with blood for several days.

Today, however, Dominica is an independent state and you can learn more about its history in the national museum located in the island’s capital, Roseau.

The country was named by Christopher Columbus after Sundays (Domicus) and for good reason. There is no evening life, hardly any beaches or entertainment as we know it. But it does have an unspoilt nature of incredible beauty. Fans of retreats and meditations, eco-tourism fans, divers and just lovers of silence come here.

Those interested in ecotourism will be drawn to Kabyrts National Park, a popular spot for families with children and hikers. Flamingos, iguanas, herons and scorpions roam the rainforest, marshes and orchids.

Divers will love Champagne Beach, named for the bubbles that rise from the bottom. Diving into the depths, tourists can see stingrays, flying fish, turtles and, of course, a variety of reefs.

For lovers of different cultures, the Festival of Creole Music in Roseau, held at the end of October, is worth a visit. The festival features a variety of music styles: reggae, calypso, compa and zouk. Entrance fees start at $50.

After visiting the various parks and festivals, travellers should check out the Boiling Lake, Dominica’s calling card. The lake is a submerged volcanic fumarole, filled with bubbling grey-blue water, usually shrouded in a cloud of steam.

Speaking of natural attractions in Dominica, don’t forget the Trafalgar Falls. The local pool of geothermal mineral water is full of sulphur, which means you can take healing baths to help with skin conditions, blood circulation and blood pressure, and is very relaxing.

Don’t forget your umbrella! Tourists travelling to Dominica should be aware that it rains almost constantly. The island is not otherwise difficult to stay on, as it is equipped with everything you need to relax and live: there are cafes, shops, hospitals and even a police station.

It is because of the rains that tourists prefer to visit between late October and April rather than in summer, when the rainy season begins. However, you have to make at least 3 transfers to get to this paradise place. The preferred route is as follows: from Moscow to New York or London and thence to Antigua, Barbados, Barbuda and finally Dominica.

Despite all the difficulties of the journey, rest is certainly worth it. It is a pleasant bonus for tourists to get citizenship, although for most this is the main purpose of the trip. Dominica citizenship allows visitors to visit 144 countries around the world without a visa, including the United Kingdom, Europe, Hong Kong and Singapore. To acquire citizenship, a person must either invest $200,000 or purchase a property.
